What We Discuss

Intimacy and sex are core to our longevity, but it’s also one of our biggest barriers and frustrations in life. If you’re not connected to others, intimacy might feel out of reach whether you’re in a coupled relationship or not. The first thing Susan suggests exploring is what it is that has us so disconnected and how we can get back into intimacy.

There are differences between someone who is solo and someone who’s in a relationship with regard to how that disconnection starts. However, both might treat intimacy like a natural thing, as if there’s nothing we can do if it’s gone.

Intentionality and Desire

Intimacy requires participation and attention. It can wane with people who have been married for a long time, but if they still genuinely love, honor, and respect each other, there’s a possibility for rekindling intimacy. Studies of women’s sex drive have shown the best way to improve a woman’s sex drive is not hormones, but actually a new partner. If you’re married, the chances of a new partner are slim, so what might help is to look at your partner with new eyes.

Procreation comes naturally, but passionate lovemaking is a skill that can be learned. Dr. Lori Mince talks about the Orgasm Gap. It’s the difference between how easy it is for male-bodied partners to achieve climax from intercourse, and how relatively difficult it is for female-bodied partners to orgasm. If one partner has trouble reaching orgasm, Susan doesn’t want them to give up and stop trying, but rather view it as a skill they just haven’t figured out yet.

Erectile Dysfunction in Women

It’s common knowledge that men can have erectile dysfunction, difficulty getting erected, staying hard, or delayed ejaculation, especially in older age. However, women have as much erectile dysfunction as men, yet men get all the attention and women don’t. Some women have it and don’t even know it.

The problem is that what affects erectile tissue is vascular issues, such as atherosclerosis. That means the smooth muscle tissue that opens, closes, and squeezes blood around the body isn’t working properly. When you can’t get blood in there, it can’t engorge, and the engorgement is what causes the erection. Men and women have the same amount of erectile tissue and if we can’t get blood flow, not only do we not get erectile function, but women don’t get lubrication. In the case of men, erectile disfunction is more psychological than physiological in up to 95% of cases.

Spicing Things Up

The sex we expected in our twenties is different from the sex we have in our sixties. Erotic play dates, lingerie photo shoots, learning sexy dancing together, trying a new sex position or location, or trying one of those 20 kinds of orgasms we’ve never had can all be ways to add spice back into your sex life.

There are so many things you can do when you begin to think about love-making as a grand adventure. One way to get started is by visiting sexlifebucketlist.com. There, Susan gives a downloadable printout and a 40-minute video where she walks listeners through many different kinds of play dates to fill out your bucket list and your partner’s.

Intimacy could or could not be sex. The key is to allow yourself to let go and be silly anytime you want to try something new. It’s not always going to be perfect the first time, so give yourself a few tries to figure out whether you enjoy something or not.

Listen now and learn how you can bring intimacy back into your love life!
