Bone Density Test (Osteoporosis Screening)
What is a Bone Density Test?
A bone density test, also known as a bone density scan or DEXA scan, is a simple and painless procedure that measures the strength and density of your bones. This diagnostic test for osteoporosis uses a low dose of X-rays to determine the amount of calcium and other minerals present in your bone tissue. The results help us assess your risk of fractures and diagnose conditions like osteopenia and osteoporosis. Why is Bone Density Testing Important?
Bone density naturally declines with age, making us more susceptible to fractures. Bone health testing can identify early signs of bone loss, even before any symptoms appear. This allows us to take proactive steps to protect your bone health and prevent future complications. Research indicates that a significant number of individuals with osteoporosis remain undiagnosed, highlighting the crucial role of early detection through bone density testing. Early detection through osteoporosis screening is crucial in managing bone health effectively.Benefits of Early Osteoporosis Screening
Early osteoporosis screening with a bone density test offers several benefits. It helps identify individuals at risk of fractures, allowing for timely intervention and preventive measures. Early diagnosis of osteoporosis can help preserve bone strength, reduce fracture risk, and improve your overall quality of life. With our comprehensive approach at Five Journeys, we can create a personalized plan to support your bone health journey.

Preparing for Your Bone Density Test
A bone density test, also known as a bone scan for osteoporosis, is a simple procedure with minimal preparation. To ensure the most accurate results, please keep the following in mind:
- Calcium Supplements: Kindly refrain from taking calcium supplements, antacids containing calcium (such as Tums or Rolaids), or multivitamins for at least 24 hours before your scheduled appointment.
- Regular Medications: Please continue taking your prescribed medications as usual, unless otherwise advised by your physician.
- No Fasting Required: You are welcome to eat normally before the test; there is no need to fast.
- Comfortable Attire: On the day of your appointment, we recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing without metal fasteners, such as zippers, belts, or buttons. You may be provided with a gown to wear during the scan.
- Recent Procedures: Please inform your bone density doctors if you have recently undergone a barium exam or received an injection of contrast material, as these may interfere with the accuracy of the test results.
By following these simple guidelines, you can ensure a smooth and efficient DEXA screening, allowing us to obtain the most accurate assessment of your bone health.
Who Should Get a Bone Density Test?
While bone loss can affect anyone, certain factors increase the risk of osteoporosis. We recommend a bone density scan, sometimes called a DEXA bone scan, for the following individuals:
Women Over 65
Women naturally experience a more rapid decline in bone density after menopause. Therefore, we recommend that all women over 65 get a DEXA scan as part of their routine healthcare.
Men Over 70
Although men tend to develop osteoporosis later in life, it’s still important for men over 70 to have a bone density test to assess their bone health and identify any potential issues.
People with a Family History of Osteoporosis
If you have a family history of osteoporosis, you may be at a higher risk. A bone density scan can help determine your individual risk and guide appropriate preventive measures.
People with Certain Medical Conditions
Certain medical conditions, such as thyroid disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, and celiac disease, can increase the risk of osteoporosis. If you have any of these conditions, talk to your doctor about getting a BMD test for bones.
Individuals with Low Body Weight or Eating Disorders
Individuals with low body weight or a history of eating disorders are also at increased risk for osteoporosis. A bone density test can help monitor bone health and guide appropriate interventions.
