Today, diabetes impacts 13% of the population, and it’s predicted that 1 out of 3 people will develop diabetes in their lifetime. But when Dr. Pizzorno started in the medical field nearly 50 years ago, it impacted less than 1% of the population.
While genetics and other precursors haven’t changed much in the past 50 years, Dr. Pizzorno notes that even if our diets have seen a significant increase in high fructose corn syrup, the research is not very strong on its correlation to diabetes. However, when we look at the research on arsenic, Bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), and so on, the correlation is much stronger. Dr. Pizzorno says that chemicals in our environment that 90% of the diabetes epidemic we’re experiencing.
There is a kidney failure epidemic happening as well. The use of certain anti-inflammatory drugs is very damaging to the kidneys, and gut dysbiosis produces high amounts of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) which the kidneys struggle to filter out.
Many diseases caused by organ damage don’t show up until the age of 45 because up until that point, the body was able to adapt and heal itself much faster. As we get older, however, the body accumulates more toxins and damage. So when we reach a point where the body can no longer protect itself, we start to notice the symptoms.
Dr. Pizzorno once treated an elderly patient suffering from severe dementia, and after testing for toxins, realized she had really high levels of mercury. He put her on a prolonged detox plan and after a year and a half of lowering her mercury levels, her dementia went away.
The first step in detoxing from mercury is finding where the toxins are coming from to stop the exposure. For example, if the patient has a mouthful of silver fillings, the first step is removing those fillings. Other things to look at are diets high in seafood or industrial waste exposure. Then, Dr. Pizzorno stimulates the body’s natural disposal methods, with something as simple as increasing fiber intake to bind with the mercury in the gut before it leaves the system. He also gives his patients NAC and low doses of DMSA to help the body process and flush the mercury.
Genetics plays a role in your health, but it only accounts for 15% of all diseases. Understanding the role lifestyle plays in staying healthy is crucial to preventing and reversing disease.
Minimize the health impacts of toxins in your body and start living better and longer today!
Joseph Pizzorno, ND is a transformational leader in medicine. As founding president of Bastyr University in 1978, he coined the term “science-based natural medicine” and led Bastyr to become the first ever accredited institution in this field. This validated that health promotion rather than only disease treatment could be credibly taught, researched and practiced.
