About the Episode

What if the reason you’re struggling with your mood, your memory, or your mental health has nothing to do with a chemical imbalance, but rather your body running low on specific nutrients? A board-certified psychiatrist with over 35 years of clinical experience says the answer is almost always hiding in simple lab tests.

In this episode, Dr. James Greenblatt, a pioneer in functional and integrative psychiatry and author of Finally Hopeful and the upcoming book The Lithium Revolution, shares the nutrient deficiencies, genetic factors, and overlooked minerals that are quietly driving depression, cognitive decline, and mood disorders, and what you can do about it.

Listen now and start giving your brain what it needs to thrive!

What We Discuss

Dr. Greenblatt has spent decades bridging the gap between conventional psychiatry and functional medicine, and his message is simple: treating symptoms without looking at root causes only leads to more prescriptions and less relief. From amino acids and B vitamins to a Harvard-backed discovery about a forgotten mineral, this episode is packed with practical, testable insights your doctor may not be offering you.

Functional vs. Conventional Psychiatry

When a patient walks in feeling sad, anxious, or mentally foggy, conventional psychiatry’s first move is a prescription. Functional psychiatry starts with a different question: what’s actually causing this? The root cause could be a thyroid issue, a B12 deficiency, low iron, or any number of other factors that a symptom-based model never looks into. The result of ignoring them is almost always the same: more medications layered on top of ones that aren’t fully working.

A Forgotten Mineral and Your Brain’s Long-Term Protection

A landmark Harvard study recently found that lithium was the only element consistently low in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients, and that low-dose supplementation could prevent and even reverse disease pathology in research models. This is something functional medicine practitioners have been saying for 30 years. The dose Dr. Greenblatt recommends for prevention is far lower than prescription lithium and has a remarkably clean safety profile, yet almost no one is talking about it.

The Nutrients Your Brain Depends On

Vitamin D, B12, folate, magnesium, zinc, and amino acids are all essential to how your brain produces neurotransmitters and protects neurons, yet they are rarely tested in standard psychiatric care. Deficiencies in any one of them can look exactly like a mood disorder. The good news is that most of these tests are simple, inexpensive, and covered by insurance. The bad news is that some psychiatrists aren’t even permitted to order them.

In addition, most people know that elevated homocysteine is a risk factor for heart disease, but few know it is one of the strongest predictors of future depression and dementia. Similarly, very low cholesterol, whether genetic or driven by statins, is associated with cognitive decline and mood disorders because cholesterol is a direct precursor to the hormones and vitamin D your brain depends on. These markers are hiding in plain sight on routine bloodwork, just never in the context of mental health.

Listen now and start giving your brain what it needs to thrive!
